While watching the TODAY show this morning, I saw a segment about Kaytlynn and Heather Welsch, 12- and 10- years old respectively, who are already elite runners. These cute pre-teens beat adults in grueling races, including 13 mile trail runs! (As you will see in the TODAY show segment, adults will curse when the young gals pass them – ha!)
This was my first time hearing about the tandem, but a simple Google search revealed many articles written about them – even in the NY Times.
Predictably, their parents catch a lot of flack for allowing their girls to compete at such a high-level, at such a young age. However, I think it’s unwarranted. Kids crave structure and need something to focus on, so why not running? They’ve obviously found their niche and who knows the doors their early success will open for them. So, what do you think? Are they too young?
